ABOUT
US
Thermopylae
Chapter 445 is one of the over 500 chapters of AHEPA. Founded
in 1971, our Chapter has continuously supported AHEPA’s
national and district projects. The Chapter is composed of
members from throughout the Delaware Valley area and are
committed to undertake projects for our local community
including the awarding of thousands of dollars in scholarships
for college and high school education. Thermopylae members are
also in the forefront when it comes to providing community
service, not only by their generous donations but in their
ongoing support of
charitable cases and organizations such as the Salvation Army,
The Sunshine Foundation, and others, including the sponsorship of children with
special medical needs.
Since May
of 1977 we have sponsered the prominent James D. Tanos Pan-Hellenic
Track and Field Meet. Throughout the
years, thousands of children and young adults from the Delaware
Valley have participated in the Track Meet and have experienced
the thrill of winning individual or team medals and trophies.
The Track Meet has allowed our children to participate in an
event that promotes fellowship, cooperation, and healthy
competition. In the end, everyone is a winner.
ORDER
OF AHEPA
The
American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association ("AHEPA")
is the largest Greek-American association in the world with over
500 chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, and sister
chapters in Australia. Founded in 1922 in Atlanta, Georgia, by
eight Greek immigrants, AHEPA was established to help assimilate
other Greek immigrants into American society. Although a
majority of the membership is composed of Americans of Greek
descent, many members with no association or relationship to
Greece have joined and membership is opened to everyone who
believes in the purpose of AHEPA. Those purposes include the
promotion of Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic
responsibility, citizenship, and family. Members have included
mayors, governors, congressmen, and United States presidents.
For over seventy-eight years, AHEPA has undertaken such worthy
projects as the AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece, St.
Basil’s Academy in New York, Cooly’s Anemia Foundation,
Earthquake Relief Fund, Heritage Foundation, Ellis Island
Project, AHEPA Educational Foundation, AHEPA National Housing,
the promotion of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, the
President Truman Statue, the General Marshal Statue, Cyprus
Relief Project, and many other charitable and cultural projects.
AHEPA has participated in Rose Bowl Parade, Census Day, the
Greek Autism Project, Deborah Heart and Lung Center in New
Jersey, and many others. The members of AHEPA are proud of their
history and projects and will continue to be committed to the
purposes and promotion of the same.
